Note: Customs Exchange Rates are different from RBI or Bank Exchange Rates. Many importers and exporters mistakenly rely on RBI or Bank Rates. This often leads to short payment, excess duty, or audit objections in customs transactions.Strictly follow the Customs Exchange Rate only for any customs related transction.

The Customs Exchange Rate is the official exchange rate notified by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) for valuation of imported and exported goods under the Customs Act, 1962. Unlike market or RBI reference rates, Customs Exchange Rates are statutorily mandated and must be used for:

  • Import duty calculation
  • Export valuation
  • Filing of Bills of Entry (BOE)
  • Filing of Shipping Bills
  • Customs assessment, audit & dispute resolution

At M S Mehta & Co, we publish the latest CBIC-notified Customs Exchange Rates in real time, aligned with official notifications issued through ICEGATE’s ERAM (Exchange Rate Automation Module) because only the CBIC-notified Customs Exchange Rate is legally valid for any customs-related transation including customs duty calculation, valuation of imports and exports, filing of Bills of Entry and Shipping Bills, IGST computation, audits, reassessments, refunds, export incentives (Drawback, RoDTEP, RoSCTL), Special Valuation Branch (SVB) proceedings, adjudication and appellate matters, or any compliance under the Customs Act, 1962.

However, in cases of extreme currency volatility, the CBIC may issue additional or intermediate Customs Exchange Rate notifications outside the regular revision cycle.
