Note: The Customs Exchange Rate is different from RBI reference rates, interbank rates, or market exchange rates. Many importers and exporters mistakenly rely on the RBI reference rates, interbank rates, or market exchange rates, which often lead to short payment, excess duty, or audit objections in customs transactions. Strictly follow the CBIC-notified Customs Exchange Rate only for any customs-related transaction in India.

The Customs Exchange Rate is the official exchange rate notified by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) for the valuation of imported and exported goods under the Customs Act, 1962. Unlike the RBI reference rates, interbank rates, or market exchange rates, the Customs Exchange Rate is statutorily mandated and must be used for:

  • Import duty calculation
  • Import & Export valuation
  • Filing of Bills of Entry (BOE)
  • Filing of Shipping Bills
  • Customs assessment, audit & dispute resolution

At M S Mehta & Co, we publish the latest CBIC-notified Customs Exchange Rate in real time, aligned with official notifications issued through ICEGATE’s ERAM (Exchange Rate Automation Module) because only the CBIC-notified Customs Exchange Rate is legally valid for any customs-related transation including customs duty calculation, valuation of imports and exports, filing of Bills of Entry and Shipping Bills, IGST computation, audits, reassessments, refunds, export incentives (Drawback, RoDTEP, RoSCTL), Special Valuation Branch (SVB) proceedings, adjudication and appellate matters, or any compliance under the Customs Act, 1962.

Under the ERAM (Exchange Rate Automation Module) system, the CBIC revises the Customs Exchange Rate on the 1st and/or 3rd Thursday of every month, with the revised rates becoming effective from Friday (00:00 hrs) for all import and export transactions. However, in cases of extreme currency volatility, the CBIC may issue additional or intermediate notifications outside the regular revision cycle. To support compliance, audits, and verification, M S Mehta & Co maintains an updated archive of the latest 10 Customs Exchange Rate Notifications, sourced exclusively from official CBIC and ICEGATE publications, which can be downloaded from below.
